[ARCHIVED] April Pools Day, a water safety event, is Saturday, April 9

A lifeguard teaches water safety at a past April Pools Day at the Recreation Pavilion.

The Recreation Pavilion is a bustling hub of multi-generational fitness and fun, but its programming underscores an important mission of water safety and drowning prevention.

As part of that mission, the Pavilion will host April Pools Day, an annual statewide water safety event, from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday.

April Pools Day covers boating and open water safety, first aid, life jacket fitting and use, and preparing for cold and deep water conditions. Guests will go through fun, interactive stations. Activities include making your own flotation device and conquering a lifeguard challenge course. Those who complete every stage will earn a free pass to the open swim session that follows. The first 30 participants also will receive a free lifejacket from the Washington State Parks & Recreation Commission Boating Program. These are mostly in youth and child sizes, with limited supplies for infants and adults.

Additionally, help is available for young people who have not yet learned to swim.

As part of a grant from the Verdant Health Commission, any K-12 student within the Edmonds School District who tests as eligible for Level 1 swim lessons can receive vouchers for three free sessions. (Level 1 covers learning to float, submerge and kick.) Staff can conduct these evaluations this Saturday. For more information about the program, or to schedule an evaluation for another day, contact the Pavilion at 425-776-9173.

For more information about April Pools Day, contact Aquatics Supervisor Rose Ploeg at 425-640-3109 or rploeg@mltwa.gov.
