Electric Vehicle Station Grand Opening
Saturday, May 5, 1pm
Mountlake Terrace Transit Center, 6001 236th Street SW
Electric vehicles will be on display and the public is welcome at the “grand opening” ceremony for ten new electric vehicle charging stations–Saturday, May 5, 1 pm, at the Mountlake Terrace Transit Center. The event’s theme is “Charge Up in Mountlake Terrace!” Congressman Rick Larsen, Mountlake Terrace Mayor Jerry Smith, Community Transit Board Member and Snohomish County Councilmember Dave Gossett and others will be on hand to plug in the first electric vehicle. Officials from Campbell Nelson Nissan, Charge Northwest, Puget Sound Solar, Seattle Electric Vehicle Association, Snohomish County PUD, Community Transit and Sound Transit will be onsite. This is the first large-scale installation of EV Charging Stations in the region outside of Seattle or Everett. The ten electric vehicle charging stations can charge 20 EVs and are a part of Coulomb Technologies’ ChargePoint® Network. The ChargePoint Network is the largest network of independently owned charging stations in the world. Other activities and displays include CT’s “Double Tall” bus, sustainability information, give-aways, and refreshments. We expect it to be a fun, family-friendly event. The ten charging stations were won by the City through a federal grant program.
Celebrate Earth Day 2012 with a Park Clean Up on April 21
Earth Day has been honored around the world each April 22 since 1970. The purpose of Earth Day is to raise awareness of environmental issues and provide opportunities for making a difference.
The City of Mountlake Terrace is recognizing Earth Day with an opportunity for citizens to give back to their community. Families, friends and neighbors and service organizations are invited to help clean up our parks and public spaces and join in other activities on Saturday, April 21 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Volunteers should meet at the Terrace Park School Parking lot, 5409 228th Street SW, at 9 a.m. in comfortable work clothes, with gloves and tools in hand. A lunch for the park clean up volunteers is included. For more information or to register, contact Ken Courtmanch, Parks Superintendent, at 425.776.1811.
Earth Day 2011
In honor of Earth Day, last year (April 22), the City of Mountlake Terrace installed a solar powered irrigation clock at the Forest Crest Playfield, 5006 236th St. SW. “This is the first of its kind in the Mountlake Terrace parks system and serves as an excellent test site for possible future applications,” said Parks and Facilities Superintendent Ken Courtmanch. The system is a stand-alone “off the grid” configuration that runs the entire ten station turf irrigation system for the sports field complex. The system includes solar panels, a controller clock, marine battery, and recharging system.
A strategy for green building, healthy trees, energy conservation, and a sustainable economy was adopted by the Mountlake Terrace City Council on August 4, 2008. Code amendments were also adopted to provide incentives for business development.
The Sustainability Strategy identifies ways the City will be a good example and encourage others in taking care of the environment and economy while achieving community livability.
Mountlake Terrace has taken a leadership role among medium-sized cities in Washington to promote sustainability. A sustainability strategy has been developed to set priorities for how the City can do even more — e.g., conserving energy or encouraging green building — and to track progress. This project was funded in part with a grant from the state Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development.
Sustainability is a term that describes taking care of the environment, economy and community livability all at the same time. It means being able to live comfortably without sacrificing the resources of future generations.
Tree preservation and protection is an important component of quality urban living. In 2011, City Council began a tree preservation program. A team of University of Washington (UW) students from the Community, Environment and Planning Department presented their Tree Planting and Presentation project to the City Council at its January 12, 2012 meeting. The project supports and implements the city's Tree Preservation and Protection efforts as identified in the Sustainability Strategy and the Comprehensive Plan.
The Sustainability project included an assessment of opportunities for clean technology businesses in Mountlake Terrace. “Clean technology” refers to products, services, and processes that harness renewable resources or that reduce emissions or waste. The three principle sectors are: energy, transportation, and research efficiency. With its proximity to Seattle and Everett and its focus on sustainability, Mountlake Terrace has good potential for the location and growth of clean technology businesses.
