[ARCHIVED] Construction to Begin on Westside Water Main Project

Westside Water Main map

Construction on the Westside Water Main Project will begin in the coming weeks after the City Council approved the contract at its Monday night meeting.

This work will take about a year to conclude. Crews will be replacing approximately 9,400 linear feet of pipe throughout neighborhoods west of I-5 with new water mains, along with updated valves, hydrants and water customer connections. After construction, they will restore the affected sidewalks, asphalt and landscaping.

The majority of the city’s water system was installed in the 1950s and 1970s, and those materials are reaching their end of life. The system serves a population of 22,640. Modern materials and ductile iron pipes offer many benefits, including better earthquake resistance.

The City Council approved the contract at $4.8 million. The project is funded using a low-interest state loan that is repaid by water customers’ regular fees and developer fees. The project supports the City Council’s goal to address aging public infrastructure.

A portion of this work occurs on 66th Avenue W, where a separate pavement reconstruction project will begin this summer, along a section north of 220th Street SW.
