As the Independence Day holiday approaches, the city kindly reminds our community that personal use fireworks are prohibited in Mountlake Terrace as they are in many other surrounding cities.
Fireworks sales begin later this week and there are two opportunities to watch public fireworks shows in Mountlake Terrace and celebrate Independence Day while keeping our community safe. The city urges the community to respect neighbors, children and pets, homes and businesses, and obey the law. The impact of an accident with fireworks can be devastating.
Personal use fireworks are illegal in the City of Mountlake Terrace. It is unlawful for any person to sell, possess, use, transfer, discharge, and ignite or “explode any fireworks” in the city. Additionally, beyond our borders, please exercise extreme caution when using smoking products, matches or fireworks in areas where they are allowed given the severity of wildfires in the region in recent years.
The city has purchased and installed 50 new signs about fireworks laws at our entryways and parks to alert the community and its visitors that fireworks are illegal in Mountlake Terrace. The June City Happenings newsletter and the city website provide information about fireworks laws and risks. For those who enjoy watching fireworks, the City Council has approved two upcoming opportunities to view professional fireworks shows including the July 3 Stars and Stripes Celebration at Ballinger Park and Tour de Terrace Fireworks Show at Evergreen Playfield July 27. Want fireworks on July 4? The City of Edmonds has a fireworks display just next door to Mountlake Terrace. Visit www.cityofmlt.com/1758 for event information in our community.
Public fireworks displays require following the city’s special event process including hiring a professional pyrotechnician and obtaining a permit. Contact the city’s Permit Specialist at (425) 744-6267 or search “fireworks” on the city’s website, www.cityofmlt.com, to download a brochure.
The City of Mountlake Terrace and South County Fire request residents and visitors to please refrain from using fireworks, respect our community standards, keep pets safe and inside, and attend a public fireworks display in lieu of personal fireworks. To report fireworks violations, please call the non-emergency number at (425) 407-3999. If you see an immediate threat to persons or property, please report to 9-1-1.
For more information about the fireworks law, please contact the Police Department at (425) 670-8260.
